Each of these candlesticks is hand-formed from stoneware clay with skill and care. Painted with pink and white glazes, the piece’s lady wears her traditional headscarf, and has her baby tied to her back in typical African fashion.
“UMUNTU ngumuntu ngabantu”
It is a complex Nguni word that means “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity.”
“I am what I am because of who we all are.”
In Africa, the definition of an individual is community-based and not individualist. Zizamele’s Ubuntu pieces represent this philosophy.
