This charming 5Lady planter has a flat back with two holes to attach it to a courtyard or inside wall. For best effect, plant it up with a trailing plant that hangs down and through the African lady figures.
Each of these planters is hand-formed from stoneware clay with skill and care. Vibrant African patterns are hand-painted in a variety of colourful glazes. The bowl’s ladies hold hands around the rim in a spirit of unity. They wear their traditional headscarves and have their babies tied to their backs in typical African fashion.
“UMUNTU ngumuntu ngabantu”
It is a complex Nguni word that means “the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity.”
“I am what I am because of who we all are.”
In Africa, the definition of an individual is community-based and not individualist. The Ubuntu bowls with their women holding hands in a spirit of Ubuntu, represent this philosophy.
